Don't wait until you can speak every permaculture book by heart before you take a step. However, pay attention to your needs, values and desires when you start a permaculture design and/or consultancy. You must know what are your assets and what you lack.
Being aware of your present situation is the key.
Whether looking for land to purchase for farming or planning the use of an existing property you own, the task of understanding and taking advantage of the unique environmental qualities your site has to offer can be daunting.

Be proud of what you do (while keeping your feet on the ground at the same time :-). Each step you make can be a giant leap for your future. Even if you're the only one to know it, while your brother says you should get yourself a proper job. You are on the good path! In the longer term, there is no other way to go.
There is space for everyone. Just find what is your niche, and try not to wander around it, thinking it's not useful. So many of us waste their energy on trying to be someone else. If you are a designer, then be a designer.
Put your skills forward.
There are choices that you have to make that remain uncertain until you actually make your own statement. In permaculture design, there is no solution better than another one. It all depends on your strategy, what are the needs, where you are working, with whom and how.
